A verb group is a group of words that describes the activities taking place and includes the main verb. Verb groups are sometimes known as processes.  To learn more, read on…..

Verb groups are often useful when studying a text as they describe what’s going on.

The following examples show verb groups according to their verb type:

Action (doing) verb groups:

She has been completing her assessment.

Fred is going to cook the fish.

 

Thinking verb groups:

Ken did not completely understand the problem.

Alice has never believed that story.

 

Saying verb groups:

Jane did suggest a good method.

He has been asking politely for many months.

 

Having or being verb groups:

Albert was not being very polite.

Gretchen had been sulking all morning.

 

Now look at this passage. The verb groups are in bold.

They decided to walk to the cafe. Gus was going to have a burger. Katie didn’t know what she wanted. She was going to look at the menu. When they arrived Gus told the waiter they had booked a table. The water told them they would have to wait as their table wasn’t ready yet.

 

The passage above has a variety of verb groups. The verb groups give a detailed description of the activities taking place.
